Finished Basement Must Haves for a Movie Lover
This project was a basement we finished for a movie lover. The basement of this townhouse was unfinished and cold. It was spacious enough and the client knew exactly what he wanted. Top on his list was a cozy space to watch movies. He also wanted space for a wine collection, bar fridge, and display shelving for his sculptures and glass pieces. He wanted it to be elegant as well as cozy. To achieve this we brought in elegance with engineered hardwood floors and floor-to-ceiling drapes.
Client’s Wish List and Design Goals
The client’s key “must have” for this finished basement renovation was to display some of his sculpture collection.
Other must have’s included engineered hardwood floors, surround sound, custom wine storage, and an electric fireplace.
Balancing Cozy Comfort with Elegant Style
Contemporary floor-to-ceiling drapes make the space feel larger and more unified. Cushions add comfort and colour. In addition, there are co-ordinated throws for use in the winter. Furthermore, we delighted the client by using his personal Persian rug collection to layer in texture, warmth, and elegance.
Must Haves for Comfort & Entertaining
Surround Sound and Comfortable Seating
This client wanted surround sound so we added in speakers next to the tv and behind the seating area for a complete surround sound experience.
Fireplace Warmth and Floor-to-Ceiling Drapes
Since the basement was unfinished it was possible to build in an electric fireplace. We added in a feature bump out wall to hide the electrical and provide some ventilation space for the built in fireplace. It’s only about 6 inches deep but that’s enough space for the fireplace to breathe. In addition it provides the focal point to the space.
Must Haves for Wine & Display
Feature Wall for Function and Style
One of the main focuses for the client during this basement renovation and a top “must have” on his list was space for a bar fridge with a shelf for bottles over it. He also wanted a custom wine storage area and a niche with spotlights and glass shelves provide space for displaying treasured items. This bump out was in line with the entrance to the room. The builders had finished off the space to the bottom of the stairs and framed in the entrance. We took advantage of the bump out and used it to create this unique wine storage.
